70th Anniversary of the Mine Closing
July 9 @ 11:00 - 15:00
This day marks 70 years since the mine closed.
The Friends of Waiuta will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the closure of the Blackwater Mine with a remembrance event held at the Lodge in Waiuta – A Tohu Whenua site. There will be free tours of the town site and gold bearing reef, some short speeches (1pm), a book launch, and refreshments.
The Waiuta township tours do not need to be booked. A guide will lead a walk of about an hour around Waiuta township, and feature tales tall and true that will give people an appreciation of the lives lived in a gold mining town of the early to middle 1900s.
On Saturday 10th July there will be a screening of the acclaimed video-documentary Whispers of Gold at 10.20am in the Reefton Cinema ($5 at door).
